Check Your Home After Hail Storms
Hail is another one of those weather facts of life here in the Tampa Bay area.
Hail can do a real number on your gutters, downspouts, siding, and roof.
That’s why it’s very important to check your roof and your gutters after a hail storm.
Here are some of the things you’ll be looking for:
- Pits or dimples on your gutters or roof.
- Missing granules on roof asphalt, or granules in your gutters.
- Flattened roof vents.
- Holes, especially if you still have vinyl gutters. (Why do you still have vinyl gutters?)
- Roof bruises, which are soft, spongy spots in the asphalt.
- Broken shingles.
Even seamless aluminum gutters can become damaged after a hailstorm.
For the most part, insurance companies do cover hail damage. Take plenty of pictures of both the damage and the hail itself, if you get the chance to. First, call a licensed gutter contractor to give you an estimate on repairing the damage. Then call your insurance company as soon as you can.
You want the estimate first, because otherwise you won’t know whether the insurance company’s offered claim is a fair deal or not.
Don’t assume that there is no damage just because the hailstones seemed small! Even very small hailstones can create very big problems.
Finally, be sure to check both your roof and your gutters. Sometimes damage will show up to one but not to the other.
