With the holidays rapidly approaching you may be gearing up to create an amazing display on your roof and gutters. While it’s perfectly safe to do so, there are still a few “best practices” you should use to make sure you do so safely.
Always use clips.
Clips allow you to hang your lights safely without nails, which are unsightly, and which will definitely damage your gutters. You can get all-in-one clips to hang your lights in multiple directions–up or out. These clips will also work on shingles, which opens you up to a host of cool design options.
You can find a lot of great information about designing hanging light displays here. It’s also a great site for scoring your supplies.
Make sure your gutters are clean.
You’re about to hang electrical wires on your gutters. While the vast majority of your fire prevention will happen when you check wires and bulbs to make sure they’re safe and in good repair, it’s nevertheless wise to avoid putting electrical components and hot lights really close to a bunch of dead leaves and pine needles.
Some of this debris is probably wet, but it still represents a fire hazard.
Make sure your gutters are in good repair.
The last thing you want to do is hang a bunch of lights when your gutters are already sagging. Do a visual inspection before you start your Christmas decorating.
If you see sagging gutters or any spots where your gutters are separating from the house, stop and get a repair first. That way, you won’t have to worry about a section of gutter falling and shattering all your Christmas lights.
This is a particularly good thing to check if you have vinyl gutters, which aren’t particularly reliable to begin with.
